Developers are starting to talk about Push notifications in the upcoming 3.0 firmware for the iPhone and iPod Touch platforms.  We suspect that the firmware release will be launched at WWDC, June 8th through 12th.  Several apps have been reported using the push notification system over the last week, one of these apps is rumored to be the new AP app. For those who are not aware, push notifications allow a server to send a call to your phone, and create an event, such as new email, without the mail app having to sync every 15 minutes.  Once a mail is ready, the push server simply tells the iPhone.

Push notications will be used in many apps, without the need for that app to be running on the device.  Think of a Twitter message being pushed to the phone, much like how a text message just comes into it now.  The possibilities are endless, and it will hopefully be a gigantic feature that I am sure many developers will want to incorporate into their applications.
